Photoshoot Style Guide

This is a guide to help you pick the best outfits for your photoshoot that flatter your body and make you feel confident. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask!

General Clothing Recommendations

  • Dark clothing always looks nice.
  • Avoid super baggy clothes as it typically makes someone look larger.
  • Jeans photograph well.
  • Layers always look really nice as well as different textures.
  • Accessories such as jewelry, belts, hats are a good addition.
  • Wear clothes that make you feel like yourself. If you feel uncomfortable in the clothes you will be able to tell in the photos.
  • Avoid clothing with big labels/brands (unless it fits the purpose for your photos).
  • A pattern looks nice as long as its not too busy (no super small stripes or dots), plaid always looks great.
  • Low contrast outfits (if your shirt is pure white, go for lighter color bottom pieces.)
  • Hands show in poses so make sure you nail polish is clean.

Fall

Fall is all about the leaves! Colors that work well for fall sessions are gold, orange, green, blue, black, brown, white, neutrals. Since fall color can be so bright, I would recommend either muted colors or deep colors (dark green, navy, etc).

Winter

Winter in Wyoming and Colorado can be a bit sparse! Colors that work well for winter sessions are green, red, blue, white, brown, neutrals.

Spring

Think tulips, crabapple blossoms, and green grass! Colors that work well for spring family photos are pinks, greens, blues (including navy), creams, purples, yellows, and neutrals. Pastels and muted versions of these colors will photograph better than vibrant or neon options.

Summer

Summer session color inspiration is green aspen leaves, long grass, and Indian paintbrush. Colors that work well for early summer sessions (June and July) are green, blue, red, purple, yellow, white, cream, neutrals. Colors that work well for late summer sessions (August and early September) are greens, blues, creams, neutrals. If the grass is really vibrant and green, vibrant clothing color will work. If the grass is starting to dry out, stick with more muted versions of colors.

For HEadshots

  • Ladies, the most important aspect of your outfits for headshots is your neckline. I recommend bringing tops and dresses that have asymmetrical or modest necklines. Round necklines are elegant, classic and professional. V-necks tend to give off a more casual vibe and don’t typically sit as nicely over your shoulders and chest. Round necks are my favorite because they bring attention back up toward your eyes.
  • Bring at least one dress to your session! Dresses with a thicker material will fight off wrinkles better than thin dresses. You can absolutely bring patterned or colorful dresses.
  • Bring your jewelry! I’ll help you pair jewelry with your outfits when you arrive to your session.
  • Avoid shirts with collars unless that is part of your job-specific attire
  • Wear simple, barely there makeup. Especially avoid heavy eye makeup.
  • Bring solid colored neutrals and basics that we can mix and match.
